S.A.L. Jonathan Harkham TUESDAY EVENING ONLINE begins 10/12
Transcriptions with Jonathan Harkham
Teacher: Jonathan Harkham
Class Length: 8 sessions
Start Date: October 12
Time: 6:00 – 9:30 pm PST
Every great painter has loved and learned from someone that came before them. In this course we will focus on the importance of transcription. Each week we will work from one great painting or drawing from history and explore the motivation, composition and mark of the artist. We will use what we discover to build on the various themes and components to further our own personal goals in experiential mark making. Throughout the classes and works we create we will also continue to reinforce the power of the rectangle, the importance of scale, and building our relationship to paint as a material that carries personal information. Promoting the idea of “objectified looking” and highlighting the power of process through an additional series of short still lives we will set up and paint/draw from as part of the course to fully understand the importance of transcription and how one builds upon an inspirational great work to further their own personal relationship to painting.
Course Outline
Each week students will create small drawings (in some cases a large drawing) exploring the days chosen work to be transcribed and small drawings from still life set-ups. We will then make a painting, incorporating both the transcription and still life information to create one major work exploring the power of great painting and how it expands our own unique mark and composition.
Each class will start with a short history of each artist who’s work will be transcribed. A subsequent open discussion will be promoted at the close of each class where students will have an opportunity to share personal thoughts and further explore ideas during short critiques of the days work.
We will be looking at many older and contemporary painters to corroborate and help us further understand this mode of painting from process, through the entirety of the course. We will use books and the internet for reference.
